Homeowner’s Guide (poem)

Posted on January 5, 2026 By Bryant Jacobi

Homeowner’s Guide

In your mind palace
have only guest rooms.
Don’t sleep in the same bed
for more than three nights.
Leave some doors (not all)
unguarded and open
for the surprise visitor
you meet in the hall
( a stranger or
a forgotten cousin or
an old enemy which
is to say lover ). Always
offer them food.
And when one morning your
face is tight and breakfast
has no flavor, get
out of there, leave
your mind for a while
to the guests and the pests and
every chance wind.
Return years later
with gifts for the host.
Make yourself at home.
But not too much.
