The Doctrine of Substitutionary Atonement (poem)

Posted on May 31, 2025 By Ian Erinson

The Doctrine of Substitutionary Atonement

Wheel your recycle bin to the curb
and wait for angels to haul away
your sins. In your forgiveness the CEO
of Nestlé finds mercy, your clean hands
purify Procter & Gamble, your halo
shines over Coca-Cola. Investors
gratefully receive your weekly blessing
while the planet chokes on toxic deposits
of saved souls and private virtues.
